The ITC Says Yes To Central
The Independent Television Commission has agreed to a change in the regional programme requirements of Central Independent Television, the licensee for the Midlands.
Central TV proposed to remove the requirement for 30 minutes per week of regional drama, while increasing the news by 15 minutes, other factual material by 10 minutes and sport by 5 minutes. The ITC has now approved this.
In its licence application, Central proposed to reflect multi-cultural issues by producing a drama centred on an Asian family, in association with Channel 4. When Channel 4 withdrew their support for the project, Central felt that it could not sustain the series and decided to meet the needs of Asian viewers in other ways. The Commission has said, in its annual performance reviews, that this substitution was acceptable.
The ITC agreed the change on the grounds that the quality and diversity of the regional service would be maintained.
