The power of community circles

The power of community circles
Opinion

Community circles encourage connection, understanding and support in the workplace and help people thrive. Here’s how to get started.

In working with organisations and individuals over the years, I’ve heard everyone talk about how much faster change is occurring. Some say they’ve never experienced this kind of change before. All around us, we see ways in which technology is altering how business is done.

But adapting to this new world, from initial ideas to full-scale implementation, gives little or no time for employees to adjust to new ways of doing things.

In an industry that thrives on collaboration, shared goals and mutual support, it’s easy to lose sight of the essential human connections that drive success and wellbeing.

I want to highlight the profound impact of creating a sense of community within the workplace and how special community circles can transform the media industry.

Community matters

Communities are the bedrock of human interaction. They provide a sense of belonging, support and shared purpose. In the media industry, where creativity and innovation are paramount, a strong community can:

  • Enhance collaboration. A connected team is more likely to share ideas, provide constructive feedback and work together towards common goals.
  • Boost morale. Knowing that you are part of a supportive network can significantly improve job satisfaction and reduce stress.
  • Harness innovation. Diverse perspectives within a community can lead to groundbreaking ideas and solutions.

According to a study by Gallup, employees who feel a sense of belonging are 3.5 times more likely to be engaged at work, underscoring the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone feels valued.

Why community is crucial in 2024

In 2024, the media industry faces unique challenges and opportunities that make community-building more critical than ever.

First, the pace of technological change is accelerating, with innovations reshaping how media is produced and consumed. Navigating these changes requires a cohesive team who can learn and adapt together.

Secondly, while remote work has its advantages, it can also lead to feelings of isolation and disconnect. According to the Office for National Statistics, 41% of people working from home reported feeling lonelier compared with those working on site.

Building strong community ties can counteract these effects, ensuring that remote teams remain engaged and collaborative (see Revolutionaries of Wellbeing and Burnalong).

Thirdly, the past few years have seen a growing recognition of the importance of mental health. In a high-pressure industry like media, community support can provide the emotional and psychological safety nets that individuals need to thrive.

The role of community circles

Community circles are small, inclusive groups within the workplace that encourage connection, understanding and mutual support. These circles can be particularly powerful for several reasons.

They provide a platform where individuals can express themselves without fear of judgement. This is crucial in an industry known for its high stress and competitive nature.

Regular check-ins and open discussions within these circles can help identify and address mental health concerns early, leading to higher productivity.

By sharing experiences and knowledge, community members can help each other grow professionally, opening up new opportunities for career advancement.

Implementing community circles

Introducing community circles into your organisation doesn’t have to be a daunting task.

Here are some practical steps to get started:

  • Identify common interests and goals: Form circles based on shared interests, project goals or professional development topics, ensuring each group has a clear purpose and direction.
  • Facilitate regular meetings: Schedule regular meetings where members can discuss their experiences, challenges and successes. This can sometimes best be achieved through active listening and respectful dialogue.
  • Provide resources and support: Offer training and resources to help community circles thrive. This could include workshops on effective communication, mental health awareness or leadership development.

The future is community

As we move forward in 2024 and beyond, the media industry must embrace the power of community. By fostering strong, supportive networks through community circles, we can create workplaces where individuals not only thrive professionally but also feel valued and understood.

So what can you do today to start building these connections in your workplace? How can you contribute to creating a supportive community that drives success and wellbeing? Have you experienced the benefits of strong workplace communities?

Let’s make 2024 the year we prioritise community and watch our industry flourish like never before.
