The Sony Radio Awards 1997

Classic FM was named national radio station of the year in this week’s Sony Radio Awards. This is the second time the classical music station has won this award in its four year history. The judges recognised the station’s quality, consistency, creativity and its accessible and impressive programme menu.

Local radio station of the year went to Moray Firth Radio for the second year running. Despite being a small station with limited resources, Moray Firth was said to have an inventive style which gave it the confidence to lead, rather than follow.

BBC Radio 5 Live’s John Inverdale was crowned UK broadcaster of the year. His professionalism, insight, warmth and humour were recognised as having won him the respect of broadcasters and listeners alike.
