The Times Cuts Price To 10p

The Times has today fired what may be the first salvo of a summer price war amongst quality newspapers by cutting the price of its Monday issue to 10p for the summer sports season.

The move was dismissed by The Independent however in a scathing Leader. It said that the price cut was a “bully’s reaction” by Rupert Murdoch to journalistic challenge and that 10p was “a fair reflection” of The Times’s value. The Independent even ran a ‘promotion’ which offered its readers a free copy of The Times.

It has also emerged that The Daily Telegraph has launched a subscription service aimed at winning new readers. In the past months thousands of non-readers have received direct mail inviting them to subscribe to both The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph for £1 per week. The full price at a newsagents would be £3.40. So far the response seems to have been encouraging.
