Thomas Appointed Editor Of The People

Trinity Mirror has appointed Mark Thomas, deputy editor of the Sunday Mirror, as editor of The People with immediate effect.
His appointment follows the decision of former editor, Neil Wallis, to defect to News International to become deputy editor of the News Of The World (see Neil Wallis To Be Deputy Editor Of News Of The World), a move which prompted Alan Edwards to take over over as interim editor of The People.
Thomas has been deputy editor of the Sunday Mirror for the past two years and was previously assistant editor of features at the Daily Mirror. He began his national newspaper career at The People, before moving on to become chief reporter on the News Of The World.
Mark Haysom, managing director of national newspapers at Trinity Mirror, commented: “Mark is a highly skilled and experienced operator with a proven track record. I’m delighted he’s returning to The People in the top job and look forward to working with him to ensure the continued success of this valuable title.
Commenting on his appointment, Thomas, said: “This is a fabulous opportunity and an exciting challenge to fully realise the potential of a great Sunday newspaper. I’m looking forward to joining this talented and experienced team and helping them win in a tough market.”
Last year The People underwent a two million pound relaunch, which included the introduction of a new sports supplement and a high profile TV ad campaign (see Trinity Mirror Relaunches Sunday People).

However, analysis of The People’s circulation over the past five years suggests that the relaunch has done little to stem the title’s steady decline. The latest ABC results for the six months ending February 2003 show that the title has seen circulation fall by 12.7% year on year to 1,191,967, down from 1,365,620 in the same period in 2001.
