Three More Metros Hit Britain
The race to corner the free morning newspaper market heightened last week as three more Metro newspapers were launched. After a circulation war broke out in Manchester recently when Associated Newspapers and the Guardian Group launched free morning newspapers in the city on the same day with the same name (see Manchester In Local Newspaper War), Trinity Mirror has now joined the battle for morning readers.
On Thursday last week it launched a free morning paper in the West Midlands. Called The Metro News, it was challenged on Friday by Associated Newspapers Metro which also launched in the city. Trinity Mirror is currently the main local publisher in the city and owns the Birmingham Post and Mail. It also reigns locally in Glasgow where Associated launched its fourth Metro title today.
Circulation figures for the papers have not yet been released but Associated have signed deals with the rail networks and claims to own the exclusive rights to distribute in railway stations in Scotland, the Midlands and Manchester.
