Time Out Applies For London FM Licence

Time Out is to apply for the last new Greater London FM radio licence to be advertised by the Radio Authority. Festival Radio, which would play alternative music, is also backed by Mentorn Films, EMAP, and the Mayfair Entertainment group, owners of the Curzon cinema chain.

Tony Elliott, Time Out publisher said, “The station would reflect what London and Time Out are all about, and because Festival would be based at the magazine’s offices on Tottenham Court Road, it could use in-house expertise to cover everything happening in the city”. The station would play new music, with live sessions each week. Festival has broadcast four times on temporary licences in London and Brighton.

The closing date for applications for the licence is July 9th. The licence is for the 104.9 MHz frequency, formerly occupied by Melody. There are expected to be around 30 applicants; Capital has already signified its intention to apply, probably for its Capital Gold station, hoping to move from its AM slot. Choice FM, restricted to South London may also apply, as may XFM, another indie music station. Saga, the over 50’s group is also expected to apply. A decision about the winning applicant should be announced three months after the closing date.
