Times Online Extends Classified Ad Service

The Times is extending its internet advertising portfolio to include a new travel classifieds search engine in a bid to drive online revenues.

Times Online users will be able to search for world-wide choices from a range of travel options including accommodation, flights and cruises. The new service will also give advertisers the opportunity to include company logos and banner links to their own websites.

David German, classified ad manager at the Times, commented: “Travel is another hugely important extension for the Times’ classified business. By creating a platform for our hugely successful offline travel classifieds, we can extend our relationship with our readers and our travel advertisers.”

The latest figures from the Advertising Association show that national newspapers saw adspend fall by 2.4% year on year during the first quarter of 2003 (see Feature: Uncertainty Continues For UK Advertising). Some analysts have attributed this drop to the growing popularity of online advertising and the increasing ability of companies to communicate directly with consumers through their websites.

The Times recently launched an electronic version of its daily newspaper, which is available to online subscribers for around £50 a year (see Times Launches Daily E-Paper For Online Subscribers).
