The Times Online has re-launched its business channel in the first of a series of changes to its online services.
The Times’ business section has been completely re-designed to allow users to assess business information by industry sector, the method used by its paid-for rival, the Financial Times.
The site will contain free to access content from both The Times and The Sunday Times as well as a dedicated classified section. The channel will also contain breaking news, reactions to the latest big business events, daily lunchtime briefings and more depth to the day’s newspaper stories via related links.
Users will also be able to sign up for business news alerts and market information via SMS and PDA.
Commenting on the re-vamp Paul Hayes, general manager of the Times Newspapers, said: “The re-launch of the Business section is the first of a series of redesigns which will enable us to create a more robust, flexible and usable website. Times Online produces pre-eminent business content and has an enviable reputation not only amongst users but also in the advertising world. Our success with advertisers has allowed us to keep the Business section of the site free of charge to UK users, and it is our ambition to enhance that reputation even further.”
Earlier this week, Andrew Hart, managing director of Associated New Media confirmed that the Daily Mail is to launch a website early in the new year, which will compete with established sites such as the Times Online and Guardian Unlimited.
The Times recently announced plans to follow in The Independent’s footsteps with the launch of a tabloid edition in the London metropolitan area (see Times Announces Launch Of Tabloid Edition In London).
