It is believed that News International’s Today newspaper will close tomorrow. The most troubled of Rupert Murdoch’s stable, Today has had a chequered history recently in terms of circulation.
The new Broadcasting Bill, announced by the Government yesterday, is expected to mean that newspaper companies with less than 20% of national circulation would be able to own television companies,(subject to a limit of 15% of the total television audiences). Murdoch’s News International is known to be highly critical of the limits, but closing Today does not bring him within the 20% limits.
News International would neither confirm nor deny the speculation.
