The new free London evening tabloid, Tonight, is to launch within the next two weeks with a print run of 100,000. Mermaid Enterprises, the publishing company behind the newspaper, believes that Tonight will be complementary to the Evening Standard and that it will expand the London newspaper market.
The editorial will be news-led, with a focus on local news, but will also include features, sport, competitions and fashion. Tonight will launch with a pagination of 16, 50% of this will be advertising with an even split between display and classified. It will be distributed at London tube and BR stations. The newspaper’s editor is Peter Grimsditch and the sales director is Anthony Weston. Backing for the project is being provided by tumble-drier millionaire Derek Clee, the sole shareholder of Mermaid Enterprises.
