Last night’s final ever episode of Top Of The Pops failed to prove its worth at the last hurdle, with ITV1’s soap double bill of Emmerdale and Coronation Street attracting a far greater audience in the 7pm timeslot.
TOTP‘s last effort drew 3.5 million adult viewers to BBC Two , a more than 20% audience share, compared to Emmerdale, which was watched by more than five million (a 33.9% audience share), followed by Coronation Street, which was watched by more than six-and-a-half million adult viewers (37%).
Silent Witness, BBC One’s drama about pathologists, was watched by a greater amount of adult viewers in the 9pm slot than Big Brother. The programme drew more than six million adult viewers, a 30.6% viewing share, while Channel 4’s BB managed 3.5 million adult viewers at the same time, a 17.4% audience share.
A programme documenting the history of the Top Of The Pops chart show, which aired on BBC Two at 10pm, managed to gain the biggest audience share of adult viewers at the time. The documentary was watched by 2.8 million adult viewers, a 17.9% audience share, whilst BBC One’s Panorama drew 2.2 million (15.3%) and ITV1’s Love Island managed just over two million adult viewers, gaining a 12.4% audience share.
