Trinity Mirror has refused to comment on speculation that it is planning to sell its titles in Northern Ireland as part of a shake-up at the UK publisher.
According to a report in the Financial Times, senior executives from Trinity Mirror have approached regional publishing groups Gannett and Johnston Press to sound out the possibility of a sale.
On offer would be the Belfast Newsletter and the Derry Journal, two of the province’s most established newspapers. Any deal would be likely to bring in up to £40 million.
Trinity Mirror is currently the subject of a strategic review intended to maximise profits in the national and regional market. Asset sales have not been ruled out although it is thought that the company’s chief executive Sly Bailey is keen to retain flagship titles such as the Daily Mirror and People.
The outcome of the review will be announced on 31 July.
