Trinity Tops 1998 Regional Publishers Table

The Newspaper Society has issued a list of the top 20 regional press publishers as at 1 January 1999. The list is comprised of the same companies as 1 June last year, but there have been a few changes to the ranking.

Recent acquisitions have affected the ranking; for example Mirror Group bought Derry Journal for £18.25 million (see Newsline), and a number of Home Counties Newspaper titles transferred from Eastern Counties Newspaper Group to Johnston Press Plc (see Newsline).

The top 20 publishers now account for 76% of all regional titles and 90% of total weekly circulation. The total number of regional press publishers has diminished from 137 in June 1998 to 126 in January 1999.
