TV Overnights: 4.5m tune in to Mamma Mia!

ITV1’s 8 o’clock film Mamma Mia! stole the show during last night’s prime time slot, winning a high of more than 4.5 million peak viewers.

The Meryl Streep film, on between 8pm and 10.10pm, attracted 4.2 million average viewers and a 17% audience share for the commercial channel ahead of BBC One’s new three part drama, Public Enemies.

The BBC One drama, starring Anna Friel, secured four million average viewers and a 15.6% audience share during the 9pm to 10pm peak-hour. The first episode was due to air in the same slot on Tuesday night but BBC One broadcast a Stephen Lawrence documentary instead, following the guilty verdict of Gary Dobson and David Norris. Public Enemies will continue tonight at 9pm.

On BBC Two, the second episode of King George and Queen Mary: The Royals Who Rescued the Monarchy pulled in 3.1 million average viewers and a 12% audience share in the peak-hour, while the new series of Channel 4’s fly-on-the-wall documentary One Born Every Minute picked up 2.8 million average viewers and a 10.8% share.

Channel 5’s 9pm film Beowulf settled on a low 814,000 viewers and a 3.8% share.
