TV Overnights: Big Fat Gypsy Wedding attracts 6.5m for C4

Channel 4’s Big Fat Gypsy Wedding attracted more than 6.5 million peak viewers during last night’s all-important 9pm to 10pm slot.

The hour-long documentary, which saw a 17-year-old bride marry in a elaborate 14-stone wedding dress, achieved an average audience of six million viewers and a 22.3%, knocking BBC One’s Silent Witness off the top spot.

Silent Witness started on a high of 6.2 million viewers but lost the peak audience from 9.30pm onwards. The crime drama settled on 6.1 million average viewers and a 22.6% share during the full 60-minute slot.

Elsewhere, 3.9 million average viewers tuned in to BBC Two for the Arsenal v Ipswich Town game on Match of the Day Live between 7.30pm and 10pm.

On ITV1, Taggart pulled in 2.1 million average viewers and a 7.8% share, while Channel 5’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation picked up 1.5 million viewers and a 5.8% share between 9pm and 10pm.

In the pre-watershed 8pm to 9pm slot, BBC One dominated with Holby City, which secured more than six million peak viewers. However, Eastenders won the highest ratings of the night with an impressive 8.8 million viewers.
