TV Overnights: Corrie – the salon war nets 7.8m viewers

Coronation StreetCoronation Street pulled in the highest number of viewers on Thursday night, winning a 34% audience share for ITV1.

The latest plot, featuring a power struggle between David and Audrey over the ownership rights to the Salon, helped the soap continue on its mission to remind us all of a budget version of Dallas. The episode, which went out at 8:30pm, was watched by 7.8 million viewers.

Earlier on the same channel, the Emmerdale double-bill attracted a higher number of viewers than the show has been securing lately. The first instalment at 7pm was watched by an audience of 6.2 million with a 34% audience share. The later episode (8pm) captured an even higher number of viewers (6.9 million) but the audience share dropped to 32%.

Over on BBC One it was time for Jay Mitchell to finally man-up and talk to the police. Seven million viewers tuned into EastEnders at 7:30pm hoping for a swift conclusion to the Heather murder storyline. Elsewhere, in a rare moment of self-awareness, it dawned on Lauren Branning that her 18th birthday might not be a happy one. She has been paying attention to the show, then. The episode secured a 35% audience share.

On Channel 5, coverage of Live UEFA Europa League Football began at 7:55pm with Jim Rosenthal on presenting duties. 937,000 viewers tuned in to see FC Schalke 04 take on Athletic de Bilbao at Veltins-Arena. The game only managed to capture 4% of the available audience but peaked at one million viewers in the final moments as Bilbao beat the German team 4-2.

Back on ITV1 the final episode of the dramatic/romantic/comedy hybrid Love Life aired at 9pm, with 15% of the available audience tuning in. The cast of selfish characters all had some growing to do to ensure the happy ending that patient viewers deserve. 3.2 million viewers tuned in for some convenient closure, down 612,000 viewers since the first episode.
