ITV1’s Live UEFA Champions League coverage scored a high of more than 5.2 million viewers last night but failed to win the overall peak ratings during the all-important prime time slot.

The Valencia v Manchester United game, which saw the England team walk away with a 1-0 victory, attracted 4.2 million average viewers and a 18% average audience share between 7.30pm and 10pm. However, ITV1 was forced to share the peak audience with BBC One during the evening slot.

BBC One’s popular school drama Waterloo Road, which stars William Ash and Amanda Burton, banked the top spot between 8.30pm and 9pm with a high of more than 4.7 million viewers. Meanwhile, Crimewatch secured the highest ratings during the 9.30pm to 10pm slot with 4.6 million peak viewers.

ITV1 had more luck in the first half of the match. The commercial channel pulled in its highest viewing figures in the first 60 minutes of the football.

Elsewhere, Channel 4’s Grand Designs put in a good performance during the 9pm to 10pm peak-hour. The property show with presenter Kevin McCloud attracted more than 3.8 million peak viewers and a 14.4% average audience share during the hour-long slot.

At the same time, Channel 5’s NCIS picked up 1.2 million average viewers and a 5.2% share, while BBC Two’s new two-part documentary series Secret Iraq pulled in 1.1 million average viewers and a 4.6% share.
