TV Overnights: New Lewis banks the top spot for ITV1

Lewis made a comeback to ITV1 this weekend with a peak audience of more than 6.2 million viewers.

The sixth series of the mystery drama starring Kevin Whately attracted more than 5.6 million average viewers and a 23.3% audience share during the Sunday night 8pm to 10pm prime time slot.

ITV1’s new Sunday night line-up also included the new series of The Cube – the game show with Phillip Schofield. The hour-long show pulled in 4.2 million peak viewers and a 16.4% average share in the 7pm to 8pm slot.

ITV1 also banked the peak ratings for a short period on Saturday night with Live Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Mother’s Day Special, which picked up a high of 5.1 million viewers at 9.15pm.

However, the BBC enjoyed the biggest share of the weekend ratings. On Saturday, BBC One banked the top spot all day, with the exception of just one 30-minute evening slot.

The channel’s sports focus proved a popular choice, with Football Focus, Match of the Day Live and Final Score all doing well.  In the evening slots, the second So You Think You Can Dance, The National Lottery: Secret Fortune and Casualty also secured the peak ratings.

On Sunday, BBC One shared the daytime ratings with BBC Two. Something for the Weekend and coverage of the Live MotoGP secured the peak audience for the channel (with 1.1 million and 1.3 million peak viewers respectively).

BBC Two’s Match of the Day 2 also got a small look in on Sunday evening, peaking with 2.3 million viewers and a 12.9% average audience share from 10pm.

Meanwhile, BBC One dominated the majority of the ratings and banked a peak run from 4pm until 8pm with Escape to the Country, Songs of Praise and Countryfile, before ITV1’s Lewis took over.

On Friday night, ITV1’s popular Benidorm won the all-important 9pm to 10pm peak-hour ratings with a high of more than 5.6 million viewers.
