TV Overnights: New Tricks wins 9pm timeslot

The penultimate episode of BBC One’s police drama New Tricks won the 9pm ratings battle last night, beating its nearest challenger with over twice as many viewers. 

7.14 million people tuned in to see the former detectives re-investigate a fatal boating collision, compared to 3.41 million who watched ITV1’s The Bill.

In the battle of the soap operas Coronation Street narrowly edged ahead of Eastenders, with 7.7 million people watching the former and 7.65 million seeing the later. ITV1’s rural soap Emmerdale had to settle for third spot, with an average audience of 6.38 million.

Aston Villa’s unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the group stages of UEFA’s new Europa League football tournament, managed an average audience of 1.06 million on Five.

The once mighty Big Brother achieved an overnight audience of 2.08 million, with an average share of 12.27%.
