TV Viewing Round-up: August 2010

Televisions

The holiday season saw viewing figures fall for all the terrestrial channels, with the exception of BBC One, which maintained a stable share during August.

BBC Two saw the biggest drop compared to summer 2009, although this time last year its viewing share was boosted by the World Championship Athletics.

Digital viewing was also affected by the end of season slump, although Channel 4’s viewing share was static on last year’s figures, perhaps helped by the grand finale of the last ever Big Brother series.

BBC One was the only digital channel to increase its viewing share – up 0.6% on 2009’s figures.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom – September’s viewing figures are expected to be up with the start of the new television season, which includes rating-winning shows such as The X Factor, new Spooks and ITV1’s popular Midsomer Murders.

In terms of Sky v Freeview’s viewing share – Freeview still has a much higher lead than Sky with all the top five terrestrial channels, particularly ITV1 and BBC One.
