TV Viewing Round Up – July 1999

TV Viewing Round Up – July 1999

Programmes This month saw the return to terrestrial screens of some successful American imports. The beginning of the month saw the start of the fifth series Friends, with the opening episode attracting an impressive 5.81 million viewers. By the middle of the month the second series of Ally McBeal debuted with a strong 3.14 million.

Competition for the Friday night audience stepped up this month. Following the return of Friends on Channel 4, BBC1 started running a series of movie premieres. Vampire in Brooklyn managed to attain an audience of 4.38 million, while Virtuosity pulled in slightly less with 4.23 million viewers.

Viewing The strong performance of last year’s World Cup has meant that there are further year on year drops in viewing figures in July for most stations, with only Channel 5 and cable/satellite stations recording year on year increases. Channel 5 managed to increase its monthly viewing total to one hour and sixteen minutes, up 20% on July 1998 and Other (cable/satellite) viewing stood at three hours and nine minutes, a rise of 2.3%.

The continued improvement of penetration for Channel 5 has meant that its share by franchise area rose in all but two regions. ITV had a bad month, will all but one region reporting a drop in viewing share.

Ratings The absence of News at Ten has done little to improve ITV ratings, with ratings for weekday evenings falling for all but one audience (Housewives/Children). Again the strong performance of last year’s World Cup has resulted in high ratings for July ’98.

Despite the revamped schedule unveiled by ITV, BBC1 was able to outperform its main rival with the key ABC1 Adults audience, although year on year the channel experienced a drop in its ratings.
