TV viewing round-up: June 2014

There was no escaping the World Cup this month with ITV and BBC One ripping up their schedules to broadcast all 64 matches from various locations across Brazil.

BBC One went with the traditional studio option, while ITV went for a part studio/part Copacabana beach combo, thereby giving viewers the delightful sight of Adrian Chiles’ knees.

Top of the pile in June was ITV’s broadcast of FIFA World Cup 2014 Live: Uruguay vs England, which saw England effectively eliminated from the tournament thanks to a brace of goals from the shy and retiring Luis Suarez.

Taking the runner up spot was England vs Italy shown five days earlier on BBC One. Despite an encouraging performance in their opening match of the tournament, Roy Hodgson’s England side still slumped to a 2-1 defeat in front of an audience of 13.3 million.

The most watched match not involving England turned out to be the 0-0 draw between Brazil and Mexico, which somehow kept 9.7 million viewers hooked for 90 minutes.

ITV’s decision to broadcast the opening ceremony proved to be a success, with nearly 9 million people tuning in to see Jennifer Lopez and rapper Pitbull launch the tournament.

An average audience of 8.6 million viewers watched the four-hour programme, which included the opening match between Brazil vs Croatia.

The tournament’s first big shock – and thoroughly entertaining spectacle – was Spain vs Netherlands, which saw the 2010 champions given a Dutch masterclass in counter attacking football.

An average audience of 7.7 million people watched as Louis Van Gaal’s side romped to a 5-1 victory, thanks to goals from Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Stefan de Vrij.

Other matches that rated well in June included: Brazil vs Mexico, with 9.7 million viewers; France vs Honduras, with 8.4 million viewers; Germany vs Algeria, with 6.6 million viewers.

Away from the World Cup Britain’s Got Talent was ITV’s only non-football programme to make this month’s expanded top programme list with 11.5 million viewers.

Also doing well this month were: Antiques Roadshow, which was watched by an average of 5.9 million people; Casualty, which had 5.2 million and Happy Valley, which received 7.8 million viewers for its final episode.
