TV Viewing Summary W/E 02/05/99

This was the week when most of the news programmes went to town on the murder of television presenter Jill Dando. The shocking death prompted a mass interest in news, with people desperate for further information. ITV was correct in its assumption that most people like their news delivered to them in the early evening, unfortunately for the Network most people decided to tune into the BBC news programmes. Monday’s edition of the Six O’Clock News attracted an audience of 10.77 million, a figure which was almost repeated for the Nine O’Clock News which was watched by 10.3 million viewers.

The huge interest in news about Jill Dando’s death had an effect on ITV’s two-part mini series on the life of Diana Dors. The Monday edition of The Blonde Bombshell attracted an audience of 7.27 million, when it was directly scheduled against the BBC news programme. Tuesday’s edition performed better achieving a viewing figure of 8.12 million.

The title decider in the Scottish Premier League between Celtic and Rangers managed to pull in an audience of 0.61 million viewers. The game, which saw Rangers win their tenth title in eleven years, made it to number eight on the list of top ten Sky programmes.
