TV Viewing Summary W/E 03/01/99

Carlton Television has scored a massive ratings winner for ITV with its quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. Following on from its Christmas Day special, this new series had steadily improving viewing figures. The first of which was watched by 11.87 million people rising to 17.57 million for the Sunday edition.

ITV claims that this makes the Chris Tarrant-hosted programme the highest rating game show on television for over a decade. The previous record-holder was A Question Of Sport, of all things, when Princess Anne was a contestant in February 1987.

The success of the show was still not sufficient for ITV to reclaim its regular position as the most watched television channel. ITV’s share of viewing for the week was 31.6%, just slightly behind BBC1’s 31.7.

There was yet another docu-soap starting this week on BBC1. Paddington Green centred on the lives of people living in the area and captured an audience of 9.43 million.
