TV Viewing Summary W/E 05/04/98

Overall viewing share is divided typically this week, with ITV taking 31.9% against BBC1’s 29.8%. Channel 4 (9.8%) and BBC2 (11.1%) still keep Channel 5 at bay with its share of 4.4%.

Although Channel 5’s viewing share remains at more or less the same level as previous weeks, it has managed to get three programmes above the two million viewers mark. European football yet again proves to be an ace card in the hand of the channel, attracting 2.72 million viewers this week. The films Danger Island and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind were seen by audiences of 2.16 million and 2 million respectively.

This year an audience of 11.39 million watched the Grand National on BBC1 which is not quite as many as the audience of 12 million who tuned in to watch the re-run of last year’s disrupted event. Still, the National retains its place as possibly the biggest single sporting TV event of the year – just a shame there are no commercial breaks really.

No ‘David Jason’ drama to be found this week, leaving the way open for the lightweight dramas to move up the chart. Ballykissangel comes in as the top drama of the week, with an audience of 10.40 million. The equally wishy washy Peak Practice was watched by 10.08 million, just beaten by Kavanagh QC‘s 10.11 million.

Coronation Street achieves an average audience of 15.47 million this week, against Eastenders 13.27 million.
