TV Viewing Summary W/E 05/10/97

Heartbeat holds on to its number two position, but has suffered a slight fall in its actual audience figure from last week’s 15.74 million, down to 15.29m this week. It was a similar story for the rest of the main dramas: both Casualty and London’s Burning have seen a slight fall in audience, but are never the less holding on to their traditional mid table places. Casualty attracted an audience of 11.79 million, with 11.98 million tuning into London’s Burning. New drama this week came in the form of Catherine Cookson’s The Rag Nymph, watched by 9.30 million, with two remaining episodes to be screened.

Coronation Street achieved an average audience of 14.95 million over its four episodes, with Eastenders watched by an average of 13.99 million. Emmerdale was seen over its three episodes by an average audience of 10.98 million. General one offs appearing in the chart this week include another Dennis Norden ‘out takes’ offering (11.89 million). This time it’s entitled Norden’s 2nd Laughter File. Lets hope he has a small library.

Football features again this week, with an audience of 9.63 million watching ITV to see Manchester Utd play Juventus. Over on Channel 5, Chelsea’s Cup Winners Cup game against Slov. Brat. was seen by 2.54 million. Arsenal v PAOK Sal, attracted an audience of 1.27 million. Football certainly seems to be one of Channel 5’s regular ratings boosters, along side the classic Sweeney, this week seen by 1.36 million and second in the channel’s own chart. ‘Import’ of the week remains Friends, this time seen by 5.43 million on Channel 4.
