TV Viewing Summary W/E 06/06/99

Despite their enduring popularity with adolescents, the four remaining Spice Girls proved to be less popular than their ex-band-mate Geri Halliwell when it came to fly-on-the-wall documentaries for Channel 4. The Spice Girls in America: A Tour Story pulled in just 2.68 million viewers in comparison to 4.37 million for Geri which was shown in May. The long-winded exposé was made slightly more watchable because of the (non)reaction on Posh Spice’s face when poor old David Beckham got sent off against Argentina.

Confirming that there really is no accounting for taste, the Stars In Their Eyes Final attracted a whopping audience of 12.21 million people. This was then topped by the results programme, shown an hour later, when 12.39 million watched a very dodgy Chris De Burgh lookalike romp away with 1999 crown.

ITV’s decision to screen all the James Bond films in sequence has got off to a successful start. Proving to be popular no matter how many times it had been shown previously, the very first Bond film, Dr No, had 10.02 million people stirred but not shaken along with a consolidated viewing share of 42%.

Two new series started on ITV: The People’s Vets, yet another fly-on-the-wall documentary series, which was watched by 8.32 million viewers and a new Prisoner: Cell Block H type drama called Bad Girls, which had 7.74 million people tuning in.
