TV Viewing Summary W/E 09/05/99
With a great deal of hype surrounding the programme it should come as no surprise that Geri, the year long fly-on-the-wall documentary about former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, should end up being Channel 4’s number one rated programme. 4.37 million viewers tuned in to see ex-Ginger- now bland Spice – drone on about how miserable her life has been since she left the group.
Following on from Monday’s special evening of programmes, this week saw the return of the animated comedy series South Park to terrestrial screens. With a much earlier timeslot and a greater deal of publicity than the first series, the first episode of this series attracted an audience of 2.65 million people.
Channel 5’s second best programme Martial Law, after the bizarre Sunset Beach, continues to be one of the channel’s few non film or sport related successes. Audience figures for the first three episodes have been consistently over the million viewer mark, with this week’s episode pulling in 1.55 million.
ITV had some success this week with its two part drama series Trust, which attracted audiences of 8.24 and 7.76 for the respective Monday and Tuesday episodes. ITV capped a good week by taking 19 of the top 30 programmes, with the top three places going to Coronation Street
