TV Viewing Summary W/E 09/11/97

Upon writing, we are witnessing the aftermath, but the beginning of this TV week gave us a glimpse of the storm that was to rage through Weatherfield. Unusually, Monday’s episode of the Street proved to be the most popular, attracting 17.71 million viewers. By Friday Jim MacDonald had succumbed to the ‘green eyed monster’ and was busy demolishing Fiona’s Wedding Day, the nation on the edge of its seat to hear Alan declare that he was not going to marry “the MacDonald Family Whore”. Champion stuff, and it certainly helped to improve the audience figures for Sunday’s episode which reached their highest levels to date (17.45 million). Overall Coronation Street took an average weekly audience of 16.54 million, towering over Eastenders average of 14.19 million, (cue Ian Beale to be sent to Italy on week long mission to rescue children).
The long awaited, and perhaps ‘near the end’ of the line sixth series of Men Behaving Badly returned this week, with an audience of 11.81 making it the top comedy of the week, ITV’s nearest offering appears to You’ve Been Framed (comedy of a sort), which attracted 11.31 million viewers on Sunday night. The Saturday night scrap between Cilla and Noel looks to be hotting up as we near the traditional Christmas time pitch battles. This week Cilla’s Blind Date only just beats The House Party with 8.75 million compared to 8.50.
Channel 4 continues with Friends (5.89 million) leading the way as ever. Channel 5 yet again uses the football to pull in its biggest audiences of the week, with the European Cup Winners Cup match attracting 2.62 million. The top film of the week was Oliver Stone’s controversial Natural Born Killers, with the ever so lovable Mickey and Mallory making their UK Terrestrial TV debut (1.33 million).
