TV Viewing Summary W/E 15/06/97
Coronation Street is again top of the pops this week, with Wednesday’s episode attracting a commendable 14.91 million; Monday’s episode came in second at 14.76 million. Eastenders’ storylines pulled in a disappointing number of punters in comparison to The Street this week. The best it could do was 13.86 million on Monday. While, down on the farm, Emmerdale achieved an average weekly viewing figure of 10.71 million.
The popularity of the soaps, has led the BBC to invest an increasing amount of money into what have been dubbed ‘real-life observational soaps’ like Veterinary School and Children’s Hospital. Driving School follows this model and is proving a huge success. The first episode screeched to a halt just short of the top ten with 10.39 million in the back seat.
Birds Of A Feather is failing to win back the support it enjoyed in its early days, dropping from 8.33 to 8.12 million week-on-week. Maybe now the boys are back inside the viewers will start to flock back, or could the BBC be flogging a dead duck? Only time will tell.
David Jason found himself at number 15 and 16 this week. A Touch Of Frost was watched by 9.24 million, but it failed to beat the old timer Only Fools and Horses which took 9.48 million.
On the other sides, Countdown proves that it is still the most popular programme on 4, monopolising the top 5 spots in the channel’s top 10. While films continue to be Channel 5’s main attraction.
