TV Viewing Summary W/E 15/08/99

The hype surrounding the first total eclipse in Britain for 72 years, gave BBC1 one of it highest ever weekday audience totals. Despite the bad weather condition,s Total Eclipse, presented by Phillipa Forester, had 9.04 million viewers tuning in. This was enough to give the programme the 12th spot on the top thirty programmes list, beating even this week’s Bond film Octopussy, which was watched by 8.44 million.

The second showing of the divine Hugh Grant comedy Nine Months, following its premiere on Channel 5, managed to attract an audience of 7.58 million. This helped boost BBC1’s otherwise lacklustre Sunday night line-up, which had seen all of the channel’s previous primetime programme beaten in their respective timeslots.

Friends was Channel 4’s top programme of the week, attracting 5.4 million viewers, a rise of 900,000 viewers on last week’s episode. Channel 5’s top rated programme of the week was the Steve Martin comedy Man With Two Brains, which had an audience of 1.83 million.
