TV Viewing Summary – W/E 17/08/97

Newcastle United’s Wednesday night European football match didn’t have the same appeal with the viewers as an old episode of Inspector Morse, only attracting 6.91 million viewers compared to 9.47 million for the detective show. The match was a preliminary round match to the Champions league which last season attracted audiences of above 9 million when Manchester United were the sole representatives of the English league.

Classic James Bond film From Russia With Love still proves that when it comes to attracting viewers it still has a licence to kill. 6.03 million tuned in on 16 August, making it ITV’s most watched programme of the night, which says something about the station’s current Saturday night line up.

Over 3 million people were fascinated by Channel 4’s serious documentary programme Breasts which examined the way they effected women’s lives. Breasts had a consolidated share of viewing audience of 17% and was by far the most watched Channel 4 programme on Tuesday night, strange that.

Despite the recent hot weather, average television viewing of all channels for the week ending 17 August rose by 0.88% in comparison to the same week last year.
