TV Viewing Summary W/E 23/11/97
After the excitement of last week’s five episodes of Eastenders, and Heartbeat beating everyone to the top of the chart, things are returning to their usual pattern. Coronation Street grabs hold of the top spot once again, with Monday’s episode attracting 18.03 million – well, it was quite a triumph for the oppressed, watching Maud Grimes drop that wet fish down the back of Fred Elliot’s brand new shop counter, (old) girl power in effect. Coronation Street‘s average over its four episodes this week was an audience figure of 16.93 million, beating Eastenders down to an average of 15.19 million.
ITV again produced the only really innovative drama of the week. The once a year new episode of Morse is now becoming a firmly established event in televisions around the nation: last year’s was apparently watched by a very impressive 14.70 million viewers. The audience has decreased slightly, but 12.06 million tuned in to watch Lewis coping with more real ale, opera, and murder solving. Has anyone noticed how quickly Morse downs a pint ?? What a fine advert for CAMRA he is. The usual drama favourites still came in ahead, Heartbeat (17.77 million), Casualty (13.85), and Londons Burning (12.93). The National Lottery managed to successfully milk its ‘birthday’ and boost its audience (well for one week anyway) back up to a level reminiscent of the days before bad PR set in. 12.03 million tuned in to watch the celebrations.
