TV Viewing Summary W/E 24/08/97

Coronation Street stands clear as the leader of the soaps this week, with an average viewing figure of 13.10 million over its four episodes. Eastenders chases with 12.12 million over its three episodes.

Top drama of the week goes to The Beggar Bride, the BBC’s two part romantic tale. The first episode attracted 9.10 million, way ahead of ITV’s best offerings, Morse (8.38 million) and Wycliffe (8.18 million).

The continued popularity of traditional BBC sitcoms is demonstrated by Ronnie Barker’s Open All Hours, shown ‘in tribute’ to his life in comedy, and watched by 9.09 million. One of the more successful ITV comedys Do It Yourself Mr Bean clocks up an ‘almost as good’ 8.93 million.

Over on Channel 4, Friends holds on to the top of the chart, with an audience of 4.86 million. Xena: Warrior Princess is Channel 5 top programme of the week, watched by 1.25 million.
