TV Viewing Summary W/E 27/12/98
So the big Christmas week TV battle was won comfortably by BBC1. Average viewing for all individuals for the week ending 27th December was ten hours and forty-six minutes for BBC1, compared to only eight hours and forty-nine minutes for ITV. BBC2 won its battle with the other two minority channels achieving average viewing of three hours and sixteen minutes, while Channel 4 and Channel 5 had two hours and forty-nine minutes and one hour and thirteen minutes respectively.
The most watched programme of the week was Monday’s edition Coronation Street which had 17.02 million viewers watching. Christmas day of course belonged to BBC1 with the evening edition of Eastenders and Men Behaving Badly getting audiences of 15.04 and 14.91 million each.
Three films made it into the top thirty programme list and they were all shown on BBC1. They were the Oscar nominated Mrs Brown (11.53 million), family film Babe (9.26 million) and action thriller Speed (9.8 million).
Compared to the Christmas week last year, ITV’s share of viewing fell by 1% points from 29.7% to 28.7%; BBC1’s share was down from 36.5 to 35.2 year on year.
