TV Viewing Summary W/E 29/11/98

‘Being here on this island and surrounded by all these beautiful women, makes me feel very funny inside’ – Miss Liberia. As well it might, love.

Over the past few months Channel 5 has used sex and sport in a bid to attract viewers, so the next logical step was to bring back the global institution that is Miss World. Around 2.7 million people tuned in to see the sights, which included the unfortunate Miss Ghana falling down during the contestants’ daywear round. In the end, Israel claimed their second dodgy prize of the year after Eurovision.

Having woken up to the reality that Arsenal couldn’t score past an open goal, ITV decided to focus their attention on Manchester United’s passage through the Champion’s League. With the whole Network showing the match between United and Barcelona, nearly 10 million people tuned in to see a thrilling 3-3 match and some comical goal keeping by Peter (Rudolph) Schmeichel.

Love him or hate him Dennis Norden has proved to be consistently popular with the viewing public for over twenty years. LWT’s And the Winner Is… proved to be just as popular as the various Alright On The Nights, pulling in an audience of 8.9 million and gave ITV one of its strongest Saturday night primetime performances in months.
