TV Viewing Summary W/E 31/08/97
Eastenders hopped over the channel for the week, episodes on each week day night followed the residents of Albert Square living it up in Paris. Well, at the very least Phil seemed to be enjoying a few drinks. Unfortunately this didn’t do too much to improve the number of viewers, with the soap achieving an average of 12.65 million viewers over the five episodes. Coronation Street holds on to the top slot attracting an average audience of 13.48 million over it’s three episodes. Emmerdale was watched by an average audience of 10.71 million over three episodes.
Top Drama of the week goes to the return of Heartbeat, with an audience of 14.08 million, the BBC’s best challenge was The Beggar Bride watched by 10.22 million. Comedies are fairly thin on the ground this week, with Ronnie Barker A Life Of Comedy ranking as the most popular of the week, watched by 8.20 million people.
The news of the tragic death of the Princess Of Wales pushed ITNs Sunday Evening News up the chart (10.50 million), and on the same night the first of ITVs tribute programmes to the Princess was watched by 8.78 million.
On a lighter note, Channel 5’s top programme of the week was the coverage of the Champions League Football achieving an audience of 2.57 million. Friends topped the Channel 4 chart yet again this week, watched by 5.18 million.
