Twelve Stations Apply For East Midlands Licence

The Radio Authority has announced that twelve stations have applied to run the East Midlands Independent Local Radio licence on the FM waveband (Newsline 26/02). They are:

  • Choice FM East Midlands (Stuart Reed, 0121 616 1000): classic and contemporary dance music aimed at young audience
  • Flavor FM (Tony Dewhurst, 01257 480715): music-led dance and contemporary soul with news, information and sport in humorous style
  • Gem FM (Radio Trent Ltd, Ian Rufus, 01203 868200): classic popular music with news relevant to East Midlands
  • Heart 106 FM (Chrysalis Radio, Richard Buntingford, 0171 221 2213): soft adult contemporary music appealing to 25-49 year olds, with core listenership of 35-44 year olds
  • Jupiter Radio (Jane Hill, 01522 549900): melodic music aimed at over-30’s with local news and information
  • Kiss FM (Faze Three Ltd, Guy Hornsby, 0161 228 0102): dance music, youth related information
  • MC-FM (Mega FM Ltd, Nick Boakes, 0171 253 2252): multi-cultural dance and soul music with social and educative perspective aimed at youth market
  • Radio 106 FM (East Midlands Broadcasting Co Ltd, Edward Stanger, 01162 712982): mix of speech and music aimed at 30-54 year olds
  • Radio Freedom (Paul Johnson, 01332 341154): regional rock, indie, dance, live music service
  • Sangeet FM (Midland Broadcasting Corporation Ltd, Vinad Popat, 01455 202518): aimed at Asian community, mainly music from Asian continent and local Asian bands
  • Slam Radio Ltd (Birmingham Broadcasting, David Bagley, 0121 359 4481): new music for young people in East Midlands
  • Soul 106 FM (Radio Partnership, John Josephs, 0191 212 1202): music-based service playing soul and Motown plus news and lifestyle features

The licence will cover around 1.5 million people in the cities of Leicester, Nottingham and Derby. The Radio Authority will decide who will run the licence in the Autumn.
