UBC Media has secured the contract to provide digital radio software to SMG’s Virgin Radio Group.
The software will allow Virgin to send text messages and SMS ads to screens on DAB digital radio receivers. It will also link to SMG’s internal systems enabling song and artist information, news headlines and any other dynamic content to be streamed in sync with radio braodcasts.
The deal follows similar agreements with Chrysalis Radio and Classic Gold Digital and brings the total number of UK DAB services using the software to 28.
Commenting on the deal, SMG Radio’s head of information technology, David Jones, said: “This innovative solution has enabled us to use the same internal systems within SMG Radio that drive our websites to cost-effectively deliver compelling content to our DAB digital radio listeners.”
UBC Media and Capital Radio recently announced the formation of a joint venture to develop digital radio data services in the UK. Capital owns regional and local digital radio licences and UBC controls data capacity on the digital multiplexes owned by the MXR consortium. Under the terms of the new venture, Capital and UBC will pool and jointly manage their respective digital data capacity (see Capital Radio And UBC Team Up To Push Digital Radio).
