UK Digital Set-Top Box Penetration 11% By 2002

A new survey by technology analysts Datamonitor claims that 11% of the UK will have the set-top boxes required to receive digital television by 2002. These boxes will be capable of fully interactive television. The report also claims that only Spain and France will have higher set-top box penetration than the UK by 2002, despite the fact that there are currently no UK set-top boxes available.

Datamonitor says that the limiting factor in the growth of digital TV throughout Europe is the high cost of these set-top boxes which consumers are going to be unwilling to pay for (subscribers see 46% Interested In Digital Box). This means the market will initially be restricted to those who are prepared to pay the high start-up costs.
