UK Is Broadcasting Heart Of Europe

The National Heritage Secretary, Virginia Bottomley, acknowledged the European Commission report on European broadcasters’ achievement of production quotas. The report stated that Britain’s regulatory and commercial lead is being followed by other member states with most of them supporting the maintenance of the Directive’s flexibility on quotas.

The report mentioned that many television channels in the country are exceeding the minimum requirements of the Broadcasting Directive. The report also states that good progress is being made by satellite companies who have not yet achieved the quotas.

The Secretary of State said: “It is worth noting that as other Members States follow the UK lead, and license their own satellite services, they are also exercising flexibility to assist new services development so that consumers have an ever-increasing choice of programming.”

With the UK having more licensed television services than Germany and France together, “Britain is the broadcasting heart of Europe.” Virginia Bottomley also mentioned that with the UK being only second to the USA, and with the film industry on the rise again, investment will be encouraged further in all sectors of broadcasting.
