UK Outdoor Revenues Jump 17% In First Quarter

UK outdoor advertising revenues look set to significantly outperform the media sector in the first quarter of the year, posting a 16.9% rise to £169.7 million, according to figures from the Outdoor Advertising Association (OAA).
Figures for the UK display advertising market as a whole in Q1 are not yet available, although in March, the Advertising Association predicted growth of 2.8%.
Whilst undeniably positive, the 16.9% jump in revenues is in comparison to a weak first quarter last year, when spend dropped by 10.8%. However, it is nevertheless higher than Q1 2001’s figure of £162.9 million.
“Ideally we were hoping this growth would have been maintained into the second quarter of 2003, but unfortunately the Gulf War and the general economic uncertainty have both acted to dampen down demand. Overall, however, we expect the first six months still to show a good year on year increase,” said OAA chief executive, Alan James.
