UK Q1 Ad Expenditure Down 6% Year On Year

UK advertising expenditure was down 6% year on year for the first quarter of 2002, according to new figures released by the Advertising Association. Figures compiled by the World Advertising Research Center for the AA’s Quarterly Survey of Advertising Expenditure put the total adspend for the quarter at £3,397m.

Only a couple of sectors escaped the decline. One was regional newspapers, which saw a 0.7% increase in ad revenue year on year, to £731m for the quarter. The same was not true for other areas of the press sector, which saw a 9.3% overall decline, including a 17.4% decrease in ad revenues for national newspapers and a 21.5% decline for business magazines.

The only other area not to show a decline was direct mail, which managed a respectable 5.8% year on year increase in advertising revenue during the quarter, to £630m.
