UK: Radio Authority adjusts code

The Radio Authority – responsible for licensing and regulating independent (ie, commercial) radio – has amended its Programme Code to include various new guidelines, including:

  • strengthening of taste and decency requirements especially where younger listeners are concerned
  • a sharper focus is brought to bear on the portrayal and scheduling of violence
  • there are clearer rules on charity appeals
  • there is a better focus for and protection of religious beliefs in a multi-faith society
  • a more flexible but detailed guidance is offered concerning obituary procedures there is a new section on prize competitions and premium rate telephone services.
