Ulster TV Cautious Over Future Growth
Ulster TV has said that 1998 will be a “challenging year for the company” in the face of increased competition from Channel 5 and non-terrestrial channels. The broadcaster went on to say that growth is likely to be “modest and not substantially different from that achieved in 1997.”
The broadcaster also announced plans for its digital television service which will launch as part of digital terrestrial television later this year. It said that as well as simulcasting existing services it will also be launching a new regionally focused channel in Northern Ireland in Spring 1999. Programming will be sourced from ITV and other regional services.
Ulster also said it was keen to work with TV3, the new Irish television channel, on the launch of new services.
The announcements were part of Ulster’s annual financial results, which showed pre-tax profits down from £9 million to £8.27 million and revenue up slightly to £34.8m. Of this figure, £34.2m was made up of advertising revenue.
