Underlying Rate Of Inflation Remains At A Two Year High

The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that the underlying rate of inflation for June has remained at a two-year high, increasing 2.4% on June 2000 due to increasing food prices.

Month on month comparison reveals that the headline rate of inflation actually declined in June. The fall, to an annual rate of 1.9% last month from 2.1% in May, reflected lower mortgage rates.

The Retail Price Index for June 2001 was 174.4.
