David Levin, chief executive of Symbian has been named as the new chief executive officer of publishing and media group United Business Media PLC. He will succeed Lord Clive Hollick in April of next year after Lords Hollick’s decision to step down from the group after 30 years.
On assuming the position Mr Levin is expected to review non-core assets such as UMB’s 35% stake in commercial broadcaster Five and its 20% holding in the ITN news channel.
The move comes at a critical time for the company, who have lost one third of its cost base since 2000 as a result of the collapse of the dotcom market. UBM delivered a positive trading statement yesterday outlining plans for accelerating a major programme of off shoring and outsourcing, and for increased new product investment for 2005.
Geoff Unwin, the chairman of UBM PLC said: “David Levin has an impressive operational background coupled with a track record of strong strategic execution. He also has extensive experience of international and media markets.”
He added: “Succeeding Clive will be a difficult task for anyone, but we have every confidence that David is the right man. We look forward to welcoming him on board.”
Mr Levin will take over after the annual company meeting in April 2005.
