United News & Media, reporting its first full year results since its merger with MAI in February last year *United News & Media Merge With MAI, has reported a 12% increase in profits to reach £290.2 million. This is on the back of turnover up from £1.801bn to £1.917bn.
1996 was a strong year for the group’s broadcasting and entertainment companies, with operating profits up 36% to £59.7m and an increase in margins from 12% to 16%. The group’s interests include Express newspapers, a 77% stake in Meridian, a 29.9% holding in HTV, a 20% stake in ITN and part of Channel 5.
