UPN Remain Tight-Lipped
United News and Media is declining to comment on who is bidding for it regional business, United Provincial Newspapers, though Southern Newspapers is thought to be preparing an offer.
At first Independent Newspapers and Trinity International were believed to be front-runners, but speculation now has it that Southern Newspapers is planning a bid of £100m for UPN’s south-eastern and Welsh titles. Southern Newspapers would not comment on any interest it might have in the business. A spokesman for UPN told MediaTel that the bidding process is continuous and will last for another 5-6 weeks before an announcement is made.
Southern Newspapers has also acquired the independent paper Southern Property Times and will merge it with its Southern Property Advertiser.
…Mike Pennington has been promoted from general classified sales manager of Yorkshire Post Newspapers to ad director. His previous job will be filled by Patrick McVeigh, who is currently classified sales manager.
